TikTok’s Handling of Users’ Privacy and Security May Lead to a Lawsuit by the FTC

TikTok is facing potential legal action from the Federal Trade Commission, in addition to the proposed ban in the United States. The investigation also includes allegations that TikTok misled users by claiming that individuals in China do not have access to U.S. user data, possibly in violation of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). TikTok could face penalties for breaching its 2019 data privacy settlement with regulators. This investigation adds pressure on TikTok as it tries to secure its market position amidst legislative threats of a potential ban or sale. The Biden Administration and intelligence officials have raised concerns about national security risks associated with the app. TikTok has not responded to requests for comment.
