Apple responded to the antitrust lawsuit filed against it by the Department of Justice, stating that it has never blocked competitors’ apps or services and does not engage in anticompetitive practices. The company emphasized that it does not prevent users from accessing its “walled garden.” Apple refuted the DOJ’s claims, stating that the lawsuit could hinder its ability to create devices and software that have made it one of the most valuable companies globally.
The DOJ accused Apple of unlawfully monopolizing the software app market by imposing restrictions on iOS. Apple defended itself by stating that it selectively limits access to APIs for app developers to protect user privacy and security. The company also cited user privacy and security as reasons for implementing restrictions on third-party digital wallets. Apple highlighted that it allows popular apps like Facebook, WeChat, and Line on its platforms and has always welcomed game streaming services on the App Store.
Regarding allegations that the Apple Watch integrates more deeply with the iPhone than rival wearables, Apple explained that supporting all smartwatches would require developing products for every OS and model. The company denied making it difficult for users to switch to competing products, emphasizing that users can easily transfer data from iPhone to Android devices. Apple suggested that users may choose to remain with its products because they genuinely appreciate them.
Apple previously stated that a successful lawsuit would set a dangerous precedent by allowing government intervention in technology design. The company pledged to vigorously defend against the lawsuit. However, US Attorney General Merrick Garland wrote in a press release that Apple undermines innovation and competition by discouraging apps, products, and services that reduce reliance on the iPhone. Garland believes that Apple’s actions stifle innovation and threaten its monopoly.
