Governor Hochul Declares May as ‘Mental Health Awareness Month’ Statewide in New York

Governor Hochul, May, Mental Health Awareness Month, New York State, Proclaims

May is recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month in New York State, with Governor Kathy Hochul issuing a proclamation to raise awareness around mental and behavioral health care. To mark the occasion, 15 state buildings and landmarks will be illuminated in green at dusk to emphasize the importance of mental health support.

It is crucial to acknowledge that many New Yorkers have either experienced mental health challenges themselves or know someone who has. By eliminating stigma and renewing efforts to provide resources and support, individuals can lead happier and more productive lives.

Governor Hochul’s commitment to mental health has been demonstrated through the landmark $1 billion mental health plan, which aims to expand capacity, fund evidence-based initiatives, and increase engagement at all levels of service. The recently adopted FY 2025 Enacted Budget includes funding for school-based mental health clinics, critical care for young people, supports for individuals involved in the criminal justice system, and additional inpatient beds at state-operated psychiatric centers.

Mental Health Awareness Month offers an opportunity for conversations about mental illness, reducing stigma, and encouraging individuals to seek help when needed. Initiatives like the Youth Assertive Community Treatment teams will be expanded to provide support to young people at risk, while a loan forgiveness program for mental health clinicians will also be implemented.

Governor Hochul’s plan includes new regulations to establish network adequacy standards for behavioral health services, ensuring timely access to care. By strengthening New York’s mental health care system, individuals can receive the necessary support and resources to improve their overall well-being.
