Copilot AI features may not be available at launch for Intel’s and AMD’s Copilot Plus PCs

Microsoft’s new Windows AI features, such as Auto Super Resolution for smoother gaming, are not only available on Qualcomm chips but also on Intel’s Lunar Lake and AMD’s Strix Point chips. However, despite the availability of these AI features, the upcoming Intel and AMD Copilot Plus PCs may not ship with all or any of these features. Instead, these laptops will require free software updates to be installed before users can access Microsoft’s Copilot Plus AI features. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that these updates will be available before the end of 2024.

According to James Howell, Microsoft marketing manager, and Thomas Hannaford, Intel PR manager, both Intel Lunar Lake and AMD Strix PCs meet the hardware requirements for Copilot+ PCs and will eventually receive updates for the Copilot+ experiences. However, Matthew Hurwitz, AMD PR manager, could not confirm if the features will be available at the launch of their laptops, stating that they expect them to be available by the end of 2024.

It is uncertain when Intel will have these features available, as neither Intel nor Microsoft provided any information regarding the timeline. On the other hand, Intel, AMD, and Nvidia want users to know that their chips already support existing AI features, with many more AI features in development by independent software companies.

While the delay in providing these features may not necessarily be a negative aspect, security experts are expressing concern about Microsoft’s Recall feature. Recall captures screenshots of all user activities on the computer as a generative AI memory aid. However, security experts warn that this feature could potentially pose a risk to security and are urging Microsoft to reconsider its implementation. Unfortunately, Microsoft has not addressed these security concerns raised by The Verge.

In addition to the security concerns surrounding Recall, there is also a lack of real-world validation for the battery life and performance claims of these new AI PCs. This applies not only to Qualcomm’s offerings but also to the upcoming Intel and AMD Copilot Plus PCs. Therefore, it may be prudent for users to exercise caution and wait for expert reviews and analysis before making a purchase decision.
