Green Chef: A Meal Kit Subscription for Beginners

When it comes to meal kit subscriptions, Green Chef stands out as a great option, especially for beginners. With its helpful recipe cards and intuitively grouped instructions, Green Chef ensures that even those with limited culinary skills can prepare a delicious meal. As a seasoned food enthusiast and tester of various meal kit subscriptions, I have found Green Chef to be a reliable choice, and I still consider it a top recommendation for anyone who wants to enhance their cooking abilities.

One of the factors that sets Green Chef apart is its range of plans. Whether you prefer three meals with two servings per meal, or you want to go all out with four meals and six servings per meal, Green Chef provides flexibility to suit your needs. Additionally, they offer different lifestyle and dietary filter options such as plant-based, low-calorie, high-protein, keto, and gluten-free, among others. It’s worth noting that Green Chef’s pricing is slightly higher compared to similar meal kits, but this is because they source almost every ingredient organically.

Furthermore, Green Chef often provides introductory offers to make your first week(s) more affordable. Each week, you have the opportunity to select dishes from the weekly menu and make any necessary customizations, such as swapping proteins or adding extra portions. The subscription can be paused or canceled at any time, as long as you do so at least five days prior to your order’s shipping date. The use of recycled materials for packaging and the recyclability of the packaging itself reflect Green Chef’s commitment to sustainability.

During my week of testing Green Chef, I experienced both highs and lows. One particular dish, the Steak & Shrimp With Creamy Truffle Sauce, turned out to be a disappointment. Possibly due to my own heavy-handedness with Maldon flakes, and following the instructions which required salting the dish six times, the end result was oversalted and unappetizing. The accompanying green bean and tomato side didn’t impress either, and the ratio of shrimp to steak seemed off. Ultimately, this dish didn’t meet my expectations.

On the other hand, the Chicken With Maple-Dijon Sauce was a delightful surprise and became one of my all-time favorite dishes. The combination of chard, sweet potato, and apple hash created a delicious and satisfying meal. The maple-glazed chicken was simply divine and reminded me of my favorite dish from Sweetgreen, the Harvest Bowl. Straying from the recipe, I added a chunk of goat cheese to further enhance the flavors, creating a truly amazing culinary experience that I didn’t want to share.

Another standout dish was the Buttery Lemon-Garlic Shrimp. The sun-dried tomatoes soaked in a mixture of lemon juice and vegetable broth stole the show with their bright and tangy flavors. It was a perfect addition to the otherwise rich and savory shrimpy pasta. The combination of lemon juice, sun-dried tomatoes, and vegetable broth was a revelation, making me wonder why I hadn’t thought of it before.

Although Green Chef provides time estimates for their recipes, I found that they were slightly underestimated. This seems to be a common flaw among most meal kit services. Unless you possess the skills of Ina Garten or one of the esteemed food editors at Bon Appétit, it’s advisable to give yourself an extra 20 minutes on top of the estimated prep time shown on the recipe card. This buffer allows for a more relaxed and enjoyable cooking experience.

In conclusion, Green Chef is an excellent choice for anyone looking to enhance their culinary skills through a meal kit subscription. With its user-friendly recipe cards, customizable plans, and focus on organic ingredients, Green Chef stands out as a reliable and environmentally conscious option. While there may be some inconsistent results in the dishes, the overall experience and the opportunity to explore new flavors and combinations make Green Chef a worthy investment for both beginners and seasoned home cooks alike.
