Gemini, Google’s artificial intelligence (AI) feature, is expanding its reach within the Google ecosystem. After restrictions were relaxed on June 18, Gemini is now making its way to Google Messages. According to reports, users will soon be able to use Gemini to draft messages, engage in fun conversations, and plan events, among other things. However, the specific form that Gemini will take on the app may vary from person to person.
In order to access Gemini, users can tap the New Chat button at the bottom and then select the AI in the following window. This option will appear at the top, above the contacts list. Alternatively, according to Android Police, Gemini will also be available as a floating action button (FAB) with the Gemini logo, located on top of the New Chat button in the bottom right corner. This FAB feature will help reduce the number of taps required to access Gemini inside Google Messages. Additionally, the FAB will cause the compose button to shrink as users scroll.
It is important to note the limitations of Gemini. When users access Gemini for the first time, they will be prompted to agree to the terms and conditions which explain how the AI works. Conversations with the feature are not encrypted, so users must be mindful of the information they share. Gemini does not have access to private conversations or know the user’s exact location. At most, it will have a general idea of the user’s location based on their IP address or home address. Chats will be saved on the user’s device for 18 months by default, although this can be changed to either three or 36 months.
To use Gemini, users must meet certain criteria. These include having an Android phone with 6GB of RAM or higher, having RCS chats turned on, and having the device’s language set to either English or Canadian French. Google’s Gemini Apps Help page provides a full list of requirements, as well as instructions on how to delete chats before the time limit expires and how to report content.
The rollout of Gemini for Google Messages is expected to happen within the next few weeks. Users can keep an eye out for the update on their Android phones.
