Comparing Apple Watch Series 9 and SE: My 13-Day Experience with Both

13 days, Apple Watch, SE, Series 9, tested

Apple Watch Series 9 vs. SE: An In-depth Comparison

Introduction:
In this article, we will be comparing the Apple Watch Series 9 and SE to determine their differences and help you make an informed decision when purchasing an Apple Watch. As a smartwatch skeptic myself, I was initially hesitant about the need for a smartwatch since I already had a smartphone. However, after my doctor advised me to exercise regularly and monitor my heart rate, I decided to give the Apple Watch a try. One of the main reasons why I chose Apple Watch is its ability to track heart rate accurately. So, the dilemma I faced was whether to go for the more affordable SE or spend a little more on the higher-end Series 9. To answer this question, I decided to purchase both models and compare their features and performance.

Price and Specifications:
Firstly, let’s talk about the price and specifications of both models. I purchased the Apple Watch SE for $249, while the Series 9 costs $399. It’s important to note that these are the starting prices for the basic models without any additional features or upgrades. The SE model I purchased came with a 40mm case size, a silver finish, an aluminum chassis, GPS (no cellular), and an Ocean Blue solo loop band. On the other hand, the Series 9 model I purchased had a 41mm case size, a (Product) Red finish, an aluminum chassis, GPS (no cellular), and a Product (Red) sport band. Both models offer additional features at an extra cost, such as a stainless steel chassis, larger case sizes, and cellular support.

Display:
One noticeable difference between the Apple Watch Series 9 and SE is the display. The SE has thicker bezels, which reduce its screen real estate, while the Series 9 has less obstructive bezels, resulting in a larger display. The resolution of the Series 9 is also higher, delivering sharper and clearer visuals compared to the SE. However, when looking at the SE independently, the display quality is still sufficient. In terms of brightness, the Series 9 is supposedly brighter with a maximum of 2,000 nits compared to the SE’s 1,000 nits. However, in practical usage, both watches were easily visible even in bright sunlight. The main difference in display functionality is the always-on display feature. While the Series 9 stays on with a dimmed display, the SE’s screen goes completely dark when not in use. The always-on display of the Series 9 not only looks attractive but also provides convenience in quickly checking the time without raising your wrist or touching the screen.

Design:
When it comes to design, personal preferences play a significant role. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to try out two different color choices to determine my preference. Surprisingly, I found the Watch Series 9’s (Product) Red design more appealing. I had initially worried about it being too bright and overpowering, but it struck a perfect balance between vibrancy and elegance. On the other hand, I chose the Silver finish for the Watch SE and paired it with an Ocean Blue solo loop band. Unfortunately, I regretted this choice as the solo loop band easily collected dirt and required custom sizing. In comparison, the sport band that came with the Series 9 was more adjustable, offering a better fit. Both models feature a similar squircle design with a digital crown and side button on the right side. However, due to its larger watch face, the Watch Series 9 wins in terms of design.

Texting and Calling:
Texting and calling capabilities are important features to consider when choosing a smartwatch. I tested both the Apple Watch Series 9 and SE to compare their texting experiences. The Series 9 features a QWERTY keyboard, which surprisingly was not as awkward to use as I had anticipated. The SE, on the other hand, uses a scribble feature where you can write letters or words that are then transformed into digital text. While neither option is ideal for extensive texting, both watches offer dictation as the most useful feature. Dictation allows you to convert speech into text and proved to be the best method for texting on both the Series 9 and SE. Additionally, prepared replies are readily available on both devices, making quick responses easier. In terms of calling, I could not notice any significant difference in sound quality between the Series 9 and SE. However, based on blind testing, my friend mentioned that I sounded better on the SE. Despite both models having similar capabilities, the Series 9 takes the edge due to its keyboard and additional functions.

Double Tap:
One of the features that I was particularly interested in was the Double Tap functionality. Surprisingly, both the Apple Watch Series 9 and SE support Double Tap, allowing for various actions such as accepting and ending calls, turning off alarms, playing and pausing songs, and more. However, the Series 9 offers more versatility with Double Tap, allowing you to trigger the shutter button on the Camera app or scroll through Widget stacks, while the SE restricts the usage of Double Tap to specific prompts. Therefore, the Series 9 wins in terms of the Double Tap feature.

Siri:
Both the Apple Watch Series 9 and SE support Siri, Apple’s virtual assistant. The Series 9 claims to offer faster on-device Siri access due to its S9 chip. While testing Siri’s functionality, I found that both watches provided accurate responses to various queries. However, the Series 9 responded directly with the required information, while the SE showed the relevant app that contained the answer. This suggests that the Series 9 has a slight advantage in terms of zippier access to health data. Nevertheless, Siri’s ability to provide health data and perform basic tasks remains consistent across both models.

Health Tracking:
Health tracking is a crucial aspect of any smartwatch, especially if you are focused on fitness and wellbeing. The Apple Watch Series 9 offers more advanced health-tracking features compared to the SE. The Series 9 includes temperature sensing, cycle tracking, irregular rhythm notifications, high or low heart rate notifications, and ECG testing. On the other hand, the SE lacks temperature sensing, ECG testing, and ovulation estimates. However, it still allows for menstrual cycle tracking, providing estimated cycle arrival. The ECG app on the Series 9 analyzes your heart’s electrical pulses and provides detailed information about your heart rate and rhythm, including detecting atrial fibrillation (AFib). This feature is a significant advantage for those concerned about their heart health. It is worth mentioning that the Series 9’s AFib detection is the first digital health technology to qualify for the FDA’s MDDT program, giving it official recognition in the medical device space. Therefore, the Series 9 clearly excels in terms of its health-tracking capabilities.

Fitness Tracking:
When it comes to fitness tracking, both the Apple Watch Series 9 and SE offer similar features. Both watches can track steps and allow you to close your rings at the end of the day, promoting a healthy and active lifestyle. During my daily treadmill runs, I set both devices to notify me when I reached my target heart rate range. Both watches performed seamlessly in terms of tracking heart rate and providing accurate readings. However, it is worth noting that if you are a swimmer or diver, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is the recommended option as it supports high-speed water sports and recreational diving. Therefore, in terms of fitness tracking, both models offer a draw as they perform equally well.

Battery Life:
Battery life is a crucial consideration when choosing a smartwatch. Surprisingly, the Apple Watch Series 9 and SE had minimal differences in power efficiency despite the SE being more affordable. During my usage test, both watches lasted approximately a day and a few extra hours before needing to be recharged. The Series 9 lasted around an hour longer than the SE, but the difference was not significant. It is worth mentioning that the Series 9 supports fast charging, allowing it to go from 0% to 80% in just 45 minutes. This can be a useful feature for those who need to quickly charge their watch. However, the SE does not offer fast charging capabilities. Overall, both watches provided satisfactory battery life, making them suitable for daily use.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, both the Apple Watch Series 9 and SE have their advantages and disadvantages. The Series 9 excels in terms of its larger display, always-on display feature, design, texting capabilities, Double Tap functionality, Siri access, health-tracking features, and superior battery life. On the other hand, the SE offers a more affordable option without compromising on fitness tracking capabilities. It is suitable for those who prioritize fitness and do not mind the thicker bezels and lack of an always-on display. Ultimately, the choice between the Series 9 and SE depends on your specific needs and preferences. If health monitoring, advanced features, and a premium design are crucial to you, the Series 9 is the obvious choice. However, if you are more focused on fitness tracking and prefer a more budget-friendly option, the SE will meet your requirements.
