California obtains federal aid to bolster response to Park Fire

In response to the Park Fire blazing in Butte County, Governor Gavin Newsom announced that California successfully obtained a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This grant will provide crucial resources and funding to help combat the rapidly spreading wildfire near Chico, which has already engulfed over 45,000 acres and led to the evacuation of more than 3,500 individuals.

It is essential for local, state, and tribal agencies working to contain the fire to have access to the necessary resources and support. The FMAG, facilitated by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), will enable these agencies to receive 75-percent reimbursement of their eligible fire suppression expenses. This program plays a vital role in offering swift financial assistance to communities affected by wildfires.

With the Park Fire being the latest in a series of wildfires this season, it is evident that the threat of wildfires is an ongoing concern for California. Securing assistance through FMAGs for previous fires such as the Thompson, French, and Hawarden fires underscores the importance of having access to additional funding and resources to effectively combat these destructive forces of nature.
