A cylindrical object fell through the roof of Alejandro Otero’s home in Florida last month, and NASA is investigating the incident. The object, thought to come from the International Space Station, crashed through the roof and floors of Otero’s house. While most of the space debris from the batteries and cargo pallet likely burned up upon reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere, a piece made its way to Otero’s home.
NASA engineers are currently analyzing the object to determine its origin. If it is confirmed to be a piece of the International Space Station, Otero or his insurance company could make a claim against the federal government for damages under the Federal Tort Claims Act. However, if the debris is found to be from another country, that country would be liable for the damage caused by the object.
