Google released a new version of Chrome optimized for Windows laptops running on Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. The collaboration between Google and Qualcomm aims to drastically improve performance on Snapdragon devices. The updated Chrome is now available for download.
While there are already Snapdragon Windows laptops on the market, the focus of this announcement is to prepare for upcoming devices powered by the Snapdragon X Elite chipset. Qualcomm claims that this new chip will outperform the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 line. The new Chrome for Snapdragon is also compatible with existing Snapdragon-based computers.
Google highlights the long-standing partnership between the two companies, dating back 16 years to their work on Android. This collaboration is seen as an advantage for Qualcomm in trying to compete with Intel in the PC market. The new Chrome version is optimized for ARM-compatible PCs to provide users with the best browsing experience.
The first PCs featuring the Snapdragon X Elite chipset are expected to launch mid-year, boasting 12 Oryon cores and double the CPU performance of Intel’s 13th-gen Core processors while using significantly less power. Qualcomm’s chip is based on a 4nm design from TSMC and offers clock speeds ranging from 3.8GHz to a dual-core boost of up to 4.3GHz.
Qualcomm claims that most Windows games will run at nearly full speed on its latest ARM laptop chipset without requiring any code tweaks or asset changes. While Intel is Qualcomm’s primary competitor in the Windows market, the company is also striving to match or surpass Apple’s performance with its M-series silicon. Qualcomm faces the challenge of achieving this on a variety of hardware from different manufacturers, unlike Apple’s integrated model.
