Governor of California Enacts New Legislation Banning Plastic Bags

Governor Gavin Newsom has recently approved a new bill that prohibits the use of plastic bags in California grocery stores, including those in Santa Clarita. Starting from January 1, 2026, shoppers will no longer have the option of using plastic bags at checkout. Instead, they will be asked if they want a paper bag for their purchases, for a small fee.

This initiative comes after previous attempts to reduce plastic waste at checkout counters in California, which were not as effective as hoped. The new bill aims to tackle the growing issue of plastic pollution and its impact on the environment. Environmental organizations such as Oceana have praised the decision, mentioning that it solidifies California’s role as a leader in combatting global plastic pollution.

With this new ban on single-use plastic bags, California joins 12 other states that have already implemented similar measures. The California Public Interest Research Group, a nonprofit organization focused on consumer protection, believes that this new bill aligns more closely with the original intent of the plastic bag ban introduced in 2014.
