Since the launch of Super Mario Bros. Wonder on the Nintendo Switch last year, one question has been on my mind: what does that goo taste like? It appears as a jelly-like substance in a tempting lime green color in the game, and players can swim through it like thick, gooey water. One of the talking flowers even asks, “How’s the goo taste?” But getting a definitive answer has proven to be quite a challenge.
Initially, I believed I had solved the mystery. The goo resembled Gooigi from Luigi’s Mansion 3, and based on information from the game’s producer, I concluded that it might taste like coffee. However, it remained unclear if the goo in Mario Wonder was the same as the one in Luigi’s game. Recently, I had the opportunity to ask the director and producer of Wonder about it at a conference in San Francisco.
Unfortunately, it seems I was the only one fixated on the goo’s flavor. The creators mentioned that they hadn’t thought much about it and that the placement of the goo was likely a simple decision. Despite my efforts, the true taste of the goo remains a mystery for now, with coffee still being the most probable option.
