The market for standalone generative AI devices is growing, with companies like Humane, Rabbit, and Iyo vying for a piece of the pie. However, while there is clearly interest in these devices, none of them have quite hit the mark yet. Humane’s Ai Pin, for example, received mixed reviews and critics argued that it could have simply been an app rather than a physical device. Similarly, Rabbit’s R1 faced harsh criticism upon its launch.

Iyo, on the other hand, takes a different approach. Instead of introducing a completely new form factor, the company is building its technology into an already successful category: Bluetooth earbuds. With the Iyo One set to launch this winter, Iyo can leverage consumer familiarity and education around assistants like Alexa and Siri being integrated into headphones. This makes the transition to more sophisticated large language models (LLMs) much easier compared to devices like the Ai Pin.

Iyo’s history traces back to 2019, before the current AI hype cycle. Founder and CEO Jason Rugolo recognized the progress being made with language models and saw the potential for them to become a commodity. Unlike Humane, Iyo was incubated inside Google’s Alphabet X “moonshot factory” and later spun off. Alphabet also served as Iyo’s first investor, though the company operates independently without Alphabet having a seat on its board.

One advantage that Iyo has is that the Iyo One won’t be its first product. The company offers a different audio device called the Vad Pro, which is a wired in-ear studio reference monitor. This device showcases Iyo’s virtualization technology that helps engineers create spatial audio mixes. The Iyo One, however, is designed to function not just as an AI device but also as a premium pair of headphones. It features a larger battery for extended battery life and a price tag of $599 for the Wi-Fi model and $699 for the cellular version.

While the Bluetooth earbud market is challenging for startups due to competition from industry giants like Apple and Samsung, Rugolo believes that the Iyo One will provide value right out of the box. By focusing on delivering useful features and prioritizing sound isolation, comfort, and music quality, Iyo aims to capture a large market for their devices.

Overall, the market for generative AI devices is still in its early stages, with companies like Humane, Rabbit, and Iyo exploring different form factors and approaches. Each company faces its own challenges and criticisms, but Iyo’s integration of AI into Bluetooth earbuds could potentially resonate with consumers who are already familiar with voice assistants in their headphones. With its focus on immediate value and a premium user experience, Iyo hopes to carve out a space in the market and capture the interest of consumers looking for a versatile and high-quality audio device.
