A lawsuit filed by X against the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) has been dismissed by a judge. The judge stated that the lawsuit was an attempt to retaliate against the organization for criticizing the company.
X had sued CCDH last summer, claiming that the group was conducting a “scare campaign” to harm its advertising business by scraping its platform. CCDH had published research alleging that X was failing to address hate speech reports and, in some cases, amplifying such content.
In a ruling, federal judge Charles Breyer emphasized that the case was primarily about punishing CCDH for publishing unfavorable research. Breyer noted that X’s motivation for taking legal action was to retaliate against CCDH for criticizing the company and potentially discourage others from doing so.
X has expressed plans to appeal the judge’s decision.
In a statement, CCDH CEO Imram Ahmed hailed the ruling as a confirmation of their right to research, speak out, advocate, and hold social media companies accountable for their decisions. He also called for federal transparency laws that would compel online platforms to provide data to independent researchers.
