The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) is taking action to raise awareness of the alarming rate of pregnancy-related deaths in the state, particularly among Black individuals. Despite Minnesota being known as one of the healthiest states, the statistics regarding maternal mortality, especially within the Black community, are concerning.
It is crucial for everyone to be aware of the warning signs that indicate potential pregnancy-related complications. Health care providers, family members, friends, and even the individuals themselves play a crucial role in recognizing and addressing these symptoms promptly. Recognizing and responding to symptoms such as severe belly pain, fever, vaginal bleeding, or thoughts of self-harm can make a significant difference in saving lives.
The Hear Her campaign emphasizes the importance of listening to concerns and taking action quickly. By educating healthcare providers, improving communication within health care systems, and addressing social determinants of health in communities, steps can be taken to prevent future pregnancy-related deaths.
It is heartening to see the collaboration and efforts being made in Minnesota to address maternal mortality through programs like the Maternal Mortality Review Committee, the Minnesota Perinatal Quality Collaborative, and the Innovations for Maternal Health Outcomes in Minnesota (I-MOM) program. By working together and implementing a comprehensive strategy, progress can be made in reducing pregnancy-related complications and deaths in the state.
The Hear Her campaign will continue to run throughout the summer, serving as a reminder for everyone to be vigilant and proactive in addressing maternal health issues. By amplifying this important message, MDH aims to make a meaningful impact in preventing pregnancy-related deaths in Minnesota.
