A $3 iOS app now allows iPhone 15 Pro owners to record higher-resolution spatial videos than Apple’s native camera app. Spatialify, available on the App Store, lets users record 3D videos for Apple’s Vision Pro in either 1080p at 60fps or 4K at 30fps with HDR. This is an improvement over Apple’s native recording, which only supports 1080p at 30fps without HDR. Reports indicate that clips recorded using Spatialify are noticeably sharper than those from the native camera app on the same phone.
Spatialify was introduced earlier this year as a tool for converting Apple’s spatial videos (HEVC format) for playback on non-Apple VR headsets like the Meta Quest 3. However, with Meta adding native HEVC conversion to its headsets, Spatialify’s superior recording capabilities could give the app a new lease on life.
Engadget senior editor Devindra Hardawar has confirmed that Spatialify produces 4K / 30fps files as advertised. He also noted that videos recorded using Spatialify appear much sharper on the Vision Pro compared to those shot with Apple’s camera app, with HDR enhancing the lighting for a more realistic look. All of this for just three dollars.
It may be surprising that Apple is not fully utilizing the hardware capabilities of the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max in its native camera app, but this is not unprecedented. Other popular iOS camera apps like Halide have introduced features such as shooting in RAW, manual controls, and portrait photos for pets before Apple. Given this history, it wouldn’t be surprising if Apple added similar advanced spatial recording features to its camera app in the future.
Spatialify is available on the App Store for $3 and requires an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max to capture spatial videos.
