New Regulations on Pollution Seek to Boost Sales of Electric Trucks

The Biden administration has unveiled a new regulation aimed at boosting sales of electric or other zero-emission heavy vehicles, such as school buses and cement mixers, in an effort to combat climate change. The Environmental Protection Agency anticipates that this regulation could lead to a significant increase in the number of nonpolluting long-haul trucks and medium-size trucks on the road by 2032.

This move is part of a series of initiatives to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from transportation, which is a major contributor to climate change. The regulation does not require the sale of electric trucks specifically but sets limits on the amount of pollution permitted from trucks manufactured after 2027. Manufacturers will have the flexibility to choose how they want to comply with the new standards, whether through hybrid technologies, hydrogen fuel cells, or improved fuel efficiency in traditional trucks.

This regulation, along with another recent rule focused on increasing the adoption of electric and hybrid passenger vehicles, is part of President Biden’s broader plan to cut the country’s emissions in half by 2030. Electric vehicles play a key role in this strategy, as the administration aims to tackle global warming and reduce the nation’s reliance on fossil fuels.
