Non-MagSafe chargers can now wirelessly charge Apple’s iPhone 12 at 15W

Apple recently made a surprising update with the release of iOS 17.4 that now allows third-party Qi2 wireless chargers to charge iPhone models at the maximum rated 15 watts of power. This change comes after Apple initially limited 15-watt wireless charging power to only their own MagSafe chargers.

This move showcases Apple’s commitment to the Qi2 15 watt wireless charging standard, which they introduced with the iPhone 13 and 14 models in iOS 17.2. The iPhone 15 was the first to support this standard right out of the box, aligning with Apple’s active role in the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) as a steering member and chair of the board of directors.

While Apple has not officially commented on this change, testing by Macworld indicates that Qi2 chargers now match the charging speeds of official MagSafe chargers. This update means that all MagSafe iPhones now support Qi2 charging, providing users with more options beyond Apple’s own branded accessories.

Apple’s decision to support Qi2 may have been influenced by regulatory pressure, as seen with the EU mandate for USB-C charging. Despite Apple’s usual preference for proprietary solutions, this shift towards standardization is a positive development for consumers seeking flexibility in their charging options.
