Observations from the Country: Monitoring the Adders Closely | Reptiles

Selecting the music for Desert Island Discs would be a challenge for me, but choosing a luxury item would be easy: binoculars. However, I wouldn’t necessarily consider them a luxury item, as I have had a pair around my neck for nearly five decades. Binoculars offer a unique perspective on the world, allowing us to see things more clearly and experience nature in a way that is seldom possible for humans.

Using binoculars, I once observed a female adder in intricate detail as she coiled among the vegetation. The distinct black zigzags on her scales, the blood-red eyes gleaming like polished garnets, and the raised keels on each scale added to the beauty of this encounter. Every movement she made caught the sunlight, creating fleeting splinters of light that dazzled in the wilderness.

Observing these snakes through binoculars made me appreciate the intricate details of their existence. It was fascinating to think that despite their presence in the area for years, they had never heard the skylark’s song overhead due to their lack of eardrums. The vibrations they sense through the ground convey a wealth of information, making them acutely aware of their surroundings.

As I witnessed the male adder sidewinding across the female in a mating ritual, I marveled at the complexity of their interactions. His movements seemed almost disjointed from the graceful flow of his body, highlighting the intricate dance of nature that unfolds unnoticed by many. The ventral scales on their bodies serve as heightened receptors, attuned to the subtle vibrations and movements of the earth beneath them.

This experience emphasized the importance of observing nature up close and appreciating the small wonders that unfold in the natural world. Each encounter with wildlife is a reminder of the beauty and complexity of the ecosystems that surround us, offering a unique perspective that can only be fully appreciated through careful observation.
