Review of Samsung Odyssey G6 OLED: A Visual Treat with Unmatched Frame Rates

More Frames Than Your Eye Can Handle, Review, Samsung Odyssey G6 OLED

Overwatch 2 has been my go-to game lately, and I must admit that I have developed a newfound love for playing Wrecking Ball. As a long-time Mercy main, the fast and disorienting motion of Wrecking Ball adds an exhilarating element to my gameplay. So, when I got the chance to play on the Samsung Odyssey G6, I couldn’t contain my excitement. With its impressive 360-Hz refresh rate, I finally had a monitor that could handle the fast-paced action of Overwatch 2.

Let’s dive into the details of the Samsung Odyssey G6. This 27-inch flat-panel OLED display boasts a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440. But it’s not just the resolution that sets this monitor apart. The Odyssey G6 supports AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, which means it can display HDR content – something that other FreeSync-compatible monitors often lack. However, the standout feature of this monitor is undoubtedly its ludicrously fast refresh rate, which surpasses anything I’ve ever experienced before.

Setting up the Odyssey G6 is a breeze, thanks to its delightful stand. The monitor effortlessly attaches to the sturdy stand with a satisfying click. But if you prefer using your own monitor arm, fear not, as the Odyssey G6 also supports VESA mounts. The stand allows for horizontal swiveling up to 60 degrees (30 degrees in each direction), and you can easily rotate the screen between portrait and landscape mode. However, one minor issue I encountered was the lack of a center hole in the stand for proper cable management. Although the monitor does feature a small rubber clip on the back for cable organization, frequent rotation of the screen might lead to tangled cables if not managed properly.

Now, let’s talk about the mind-bogglingly fast refresh rate of the Odyssey G6. When I first tested the Razer Blade 18 gaming laptop, which boasted a blazing 300-Hz refresh rate, I thought it would be excessive. After all, the human eye doesn’t perceive things in “frames per second.” Our visual perception is heavily influenced by factors like contrast and motion. Therefore, even if we can technically detect flickering artifacts that flash by at very high speeds, we may not notice a significant difference between a 120-Hz display and a 300-Hz display in practice. This is because we are not consciously focused on how quickly the image on the screen updates.

However, frame rate becomes crucial when it comes to tracking fast-moving objects or players in video games. A lower frame rate can make objects appear to jump around rather than move smoothly. To understand this concept better, you can try an online tool that compares 24 fps to 120 fps (if your monitor supports it) with and without motion blur. The difference in smoothness becomes evident.

It’s important to reflect on why this phenomenon occurs because the Odyssey G6 takes smooth motion to a whole new level. In fact, it almost seems unnecessarily smooth. After using this monitor for a couple of weeks, I am still unsure whether such smoothness is beneficial. At times, I find myself questioning if it is my brain that is limiting my ability to mentally process the enemy’s movements at a stunning 360 times per second.

The Odyssey G6 undoubtedly enhances the Overwatch 2 gaming experience. The combination of its high resolution, HDR support, and mind-blowing refresh rate creates an incredibly immersive gameplay environment. Playing as Wrecking Ball has become even more thrilling, as I can precisely track fast-moving enemies and effortlessly traverse the map with unparalleled fluidity.

In conclusion, the Samsung Odyssey G6 is a remarkable gaming monitor that pushes the boundaries of smooth motion. It offers a visually stunning experience that truly enhances gameplay. While the 360-Hz refresh rate may seem excessive to some, it undeniably delivers a competitive advantage in fast-paced games like Overwatch 2. Whether you’re a casual gamer or a professional esports player, the Odyssey G6 is a worthy investment that will revolutionize your gaming experience.
