Artificial intelligence (AI) has become an integral part of our lives, infiltrating various aspects of technology. It has made its way into messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram, owned by Meta. These apps are now incorporating AI capabilities, including the generation of images.

Recently, I had the opportunity to experience this firsthand at Meta Connect, where demonstrations were held using Samsung Galaxy S22s. The focus was on showcasing Llama 3.2’s image generation abilities. These new models developed by Meta are the company’s pioneering vision models that can understand images and text within a conversation. As someone who has dabbled with Google’s AI, I was curious to see how Meta’s offering compared. To my surprise, I found many similarities, particularly in terms of the challenges faced.

One of the main hurdles I encountered was related to understanding the querying process. This is a recurring issue I have experienced with Gemini, another AI system. Despite my familiarity with AI technology, I still found myself grappling with the intricacies of querying. It became apparent that there is still much to learn about effectively communicating with AI systems.

When it came time to generate an image, my original idea was to create a photo of a family dressed as characters from Sonic the Hedgehog, soaring through space. To kickstart the process, I posed the request to Meta AI, via the Messenger app, asking it to “imagine a family of three dressed as various characters from Sonic the Hedgehog” to prepare for Halloween. The resulting image depicted a traditional nuclear family, comprising a mother, father, and child, all adorned in Sonic costumes. The mother figure was represented as Knuckles, the father as Sonic, and the child as Tails. However, as the child was depicted as a boy, I requested the AI to change “the gender of the child in the middle.” To my surprise, the AI presented another image with a different boy altogether, altering the entire scope and composition of the photo.

At this point, I grew frustrated with the demonstration and decided to explore a different approach. I requested Meta AI to change the background of the existing image to something with a “space theme.” The AI accurately executed this instruction, prompting me to further ask it to “change the post to flying.” It was through these modifications that I ended up with the header image above, which showcased a man dressed as Sonic accompanied by three different children. The final image fell short of my initial vision, leaving me to question whether I should have provided more specific details to ensure the desired outcome. However, in fairness to myself, we are all still navigating the relatively new realm of AI, and there is much yet to be fully understood.

Considering the capabilities demonstrated by Meta AI, it is highly likely that we will witness an upsurge in similar imagery appearing on our Instagram feeds as this feature becomes more widely available. The integration of AI into popular messaging apps opens up a world of possibilities for users to engage with creative and personalized content. However, it also comes with its own set of challenges and limitations.

AI-generated imagery relies heavily on the instructions provided by users, making it crucial to be precise in conveying desired outcomes. Failing to communicate effectively with AI systems can lead to unexpected results, as in my case. This highlights the need for users to familiarize themselves with the intricacies of AI communication, ensuring they are well-equipped to extract the desired output from these systems.
