The latest episode of “American Idol” Season 22 showcased the top 24 contestants, but it was overshadowed by intense Disney brand promotion. The contestants were brought to the Aulani resort in Hawaii, with mentions of Disney characters like Lilo and Stitch and Minnie Mouse dominating the episode. While the performances were standout, the forced marketing took away from the authenticity of the contestants’ journeys.
Despite the distractions, Episode 8 allowed ABC viewers to have a say in who stays and who goes by texting their votes. Season 9’s Tori Kelly and Season 21 winner Iam Tongi made appearances to share their experiences with the show that launched their careers.
Among the highlights was Abi Carter’s powerful performance of “Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)” by Hillsong United. Her passion and talent left the judges, especially Katy Perry, impressed. Jayna Elise redeemed herself from her Season 21 elimination with a confident performance of Demi Lovato’s “Confident.” Will Moseley’s rendition of Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay” was dubbed the judges’ favorite of the night.
On the flip side, Kayko and Blake Prohel struggled to impress the judges. Kayko’s emotional performance of his original song about grief was heartfelt but inconsistent in terms of hitting the right notes. Blake’s rendition of Justin Bieber’s “Anyone” started off shaky and lacked the vocal challenge needed to stand out among the competition.
Overall, the top 24 contestants delivered a mix of heartfelt and impressive performances, despite the pervasive Disney branding that overshadowed the episode. The true test lies ahead as viewers decide who will proceed in the competition.
