Truecaller, the popular caller ID application, has recently launched a web version called Truecaller for Web. This new version brings a variety of features to the desktop, including SMS and chat mirroring, call notifications, and number search functionality. While initially only available to Android users in India, Truecaller plans to expand support to other territories in the future.
To access Truecaller for Web, Android users in India can link their devices to the web client on a PC or Mac using a QR code. Currently, Truecaller limits the number of active web sessions to one, and users are automatically signed out after 30 days of no usage. Users also have the option to manually de-link a browser from the settings, similar to other messaging apps like WhatsApp or Telegram.
It’s worth noting that Truecaller is a bit late in offering the SMS and chat mirroring feature, as Microsoft already provides this functionality for Android and iPhone users on Windows through Phone Link. Nevertheless, Truecaller’s feature could still be convenient for users who want to quickly respond to texts or access one-time passwords (OTPs) for logins.
In addition to SMS and chat mirroring, Truecaller also allows users to look up phone numbers on its website, albeit with some rate-limits. However, with the web client, users will be able to look up numbers without any such limitations. Furthermore, the web client displays real-time caller ID notifications when a user receives a call, adding another layer of convenience.
The company revealed that there are 80 million people who receive SMS pop-up summary notifications daily. This suggests that these users have given Truecaller permission to read their SMS messages. However, it’s still unclear if these individuals are using Truecaller as their primary SMS client.
Truecaller has been focusing on introducing more AI-powered features in recent months. For instance, it launched a feature update called “Max” for Android users that blocks calls from unapproved contacts or spam detected by AI. Additionally, Truecaller introduced call recording and AI-powered transcription features to India, its biggest market with 259 million users. This feature had previously been launched in the United States.
Despite experiencing lower revenues in the last quarter, Truecaller’s stock saw a 32% dip in October 2023. However, it has since recovered from the low price of SEK24.47 ($2.32) to trading at around SEK31.68 ($3) at the time of writing.
