NVLD affects a person’s spatial-visual skills, making tasks like reading maps or navigating social situations more difficult. Unlike dyslexia, which is often recognized early on, signs of NVLD typically emerge during adolescence when more complex social interactions and academic demands come into play.
Individuals with NVLD are often misunderstood and may be misdiagnosed as having autism spectrum disorder due to overlapping traits. Advocates like Amy Margolis are working to have NVLD officially recognized in diagnostic manuals to ensure those affected have access to necessary resources and support.
