The latest high-capacity hard drives are often targeted towards cloud service providers (CSPs) and businesses, but there is also a demand for them among creative professionals and regular users. To meet this need, Western Digital has launched shipments of their Red Pro 24 TB HDDs, designed for high-end NAS use by those with substantial storage needs.

The Red Pro 24 TB hard drives from Western Digital follow their 22 TB model released in 2022, offering an improvement in capacity for NAS and consumer use. These hard drives feature conventional magnetic recording (CMR), a 7200 RPM speed, 512 MB cache, and OptiNAND technology for enhanced reliability, performance, and power efficiency. With a media to cache transfer rate of up to 287 MB/s, these hard drives are among the fastest available for regular consumers.

Similar to other high-end NAS hard drives, the Red Pro 24 TB drives are filled with helium and include rotation vibration sensors and shock sensors to prevent disturbances and damage. However, they do not have the ArmorCache feature found in WD Gold and Ultrastar drives, which provides protection and improved performance in certain modes.

Designed for continuous operation in vibrating environments, the Red Pro 24 TB HDDs can handle up to 550 TB/year workloads and 600,000 load/unload cycles. They consume up to 6.4W during read/write operations, 3.9W in idle mode, and 1.2W in standby/sleep mode.

The WD Red Pro 24 TB hard drives are now available for purchase through resellers and NAS manufacturers, offering a slightly more affordable option compared to the WD Gold 24 TB model.
