What prompted The Dixie Chicks to change their name?

change, Dixie Chicks, name.

It has been over four years since the group officially changed their name to The Chicks. As they prepare to perform at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, it’s hard to forget their previous name, The Dixie Chicks.

The decision to change their name came amidst global protests following the death of George Floyd in 2020. The band wanted to distance themselves from the negative connotations associated with the word “Dixie.” Lead singer Natalie Maines mentioned that the turning point came when NASCAR banned the Confederate flag, prompting them to make the change without hesitation.

This wasn’t the first time The Chicks found themselves in political controversy. In 2003, Maines made a statement criticizing then-President George W. Bush and received backlash in the form of radio blacklisting and death threats.

Formed in Dallas in the late 1980s, The Chicks started as a bluegrass band with sisters Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer. They have evolved over the years and continue to make their mark on the country music scene.
