Samsung has introduced new features to its AI-powered food and recipe app, Samsung Food, aiming to simplify meal planning and food management tasks. The updated app now allows users to add items to a Food List simply by taking a picture of them. The app can then suggest recipes based on the food in the list and automatically remove items once they are used in a recipe. It also adds them back to the list once the user ticks them off their shopping list. These new features are part of a paid tier called Samsung Food Plus, which costs $6.99 a month or $59.99 a year. In addition to the Food List feature, the paid tier removes ads, offers a tailored seven-day meal plan, allows users to personalize recipes using AI, and tracks nutrition goals. The app is available on both iOS and Android and requires a Samsung Account.
The new updates address some of the limitations of the previous version of the app. Users can now easily add items to their food list by taking a picture of the ingredients they have. The app creates meal plans based on the food list and prioritizes items that are nearing their use-by date. A new “Search with Your Food List” feature allows users to find recipes based on the ingredients they have. All these features make meal planning and shopping much easier, as long as users are willing to do it all within Samsung’s app.
One of the main features of the updated app is Vision AI, which uses the phone’s camera to identify items and add them to the Food List. Users can simply take a picture of the food in their pantry or fridge, and the app will automatically add the ingredients to the list. The Vision AI feature is also available on Samsung’s Family Hub smart fridge, which uses in-unit AI-powered cameras to identify and add certain foods to the list. However, the app version can identify over 40,000 types of ingredients using cloud processing, while the fridge can only spot 33 types.
Samsung Food also integrates with compatible Samsung appliances, such as the Family Hub smart fridge and connected ovens. The app features AI-guided cooking steps that allow users to preheat ovens, set timers, and adjust temperatures according to the recipe they are cooking, all from the app itself. While Samsung appliances are not necessary to use the Samsung Food app, the integration with these appliances enhances the user experience.
These new features come as Samsung Food is being announced ahead of the IFA 2023 tech show in Berlin. They further establish the app’s focus on being an ultimate meal planning tool, allowing users to collect recipes from various sources, easily input the food they have in their fridge and pantry, and plan meals based on what they already have.
In addition to making it easier to add food items to the list, the updated app includes several automated features to simplify maintaining the list. Once a user has cooked something, the app can automatically remove it from the food list and add it to the shopping list. When shopping using the list, the app can automatically add purchased items back to the food list. This level of organization helps create a more tailored meal plan that uses the items already available and can save users money on grocery bills. While the $7 monthly fee for Samsung Food Plus may seem expensive, it has the potential to offset monthly grocery expenses if it works as advertised.
Samsung Food Plus is currently rolling out, and it offers a full week of tailored meal plans with recipes based on users’ nutritional needs, chosen diets, and previous recipe preferences. The free version of the app provides three days of recommendations. With its new features and integration with Samsung appliances, Samsung Food aims to be a comprehensive and convenient meal planning and food management solution for users.
