The landscape of artificial intelligence (AI) in the UK and Ireland is filled with ambition, but a recent study has unveiled a significant gap between these aspirations and the actual readiness of businesses to implement AI strategies. The study, conducted by HPE, surveyed 400 IT leaders from various sectors in the region and shed light on the challenges surrounding data readiness, strategy alignment, security, and governance, all of which impact the successful implementation of AI within organizations.
While an overwhelming majority of companies (96%) reported that they have already set, or are in the process of setting up, AI goals, only one-third (32%) of IT leaders believe that their organization is truly ready to reap the rewards of AI. Notably, the report found that businesses are investing in AI without fully understanding the technology and how to implement it effectively. Additionally, the study revealed that only 6% of businesses possess the capability to perform real-time data operations, a critical component for innovation. Less than one in three companies (29%) have established data governance models, and two in five (40%) do not feel adequately prepared to handle key data preparation tasks such as accessing, storing, and analyzing data. These statistics suggest a lack of readiness when it comes to building a solid data foundation for AI adoption.
Examining AI infrastructure, the report discovered that although 92% of businesses believe their network infrastructure is capable of supporting AI traffic, less than half fully comprehend the demanding nature of various AI workloads. This lack of understanding regarding the requirements of AI workloads poses a significant challenge that businesses must overcome to effectively deploy AI solutions.
The findings of this study highlight the urgency for businesses to take a more measured approach to their AI initiatives. Merely investing in AI without proper planning and groundwork can have adverse effects on long-term success. Armstrong-Barnes stresses the need for organizations to evaluate their readiness and align their departments to maximize the potential of AI technologies.
