Marvel Games and NetEase have revealed a new team shooter called Marvel Rivals, which draws characters from the Marvel Multiverse. Playable characters include members of the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and the X-Men.
Marvel Rivals is a third-person 6v6 team-based shooter that will be free to play. It is set in a constantly evolving universe with seasonal updates introducing new heroes, villains, maps, and challenges.
The game promises a vast array of characters to choose from, with a limited roster of about a dozen characters available upon the alpha launch in May. The developers have confirmed characters like Spider-Man, Black Panther, Magneto, and more, with hints that Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Hulk, and Iron Man will also be playable. Screenshots show heroes like Dr. Strange, Storm, and Scarlet Witch, indicating access to the entire Marvel roster.
Maps play a crucial role in team-based shooters, but the exact number of maps available at alpha launch remains undisclosed. However, teasers suggest maps like Asgard and Tokyo of 2099, with destructible environments and characters able to reshape the terrain with their powers.
The game’s storyline involves Doctor Dooms, multiple timelines, and colliding universes, typical of cosmic Marvel narratives. The alpha version will be available for PC players in May, with no confirmation of a console release.
Aside from Marvel Rivals, another major Marvel game in the works is Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, a story-driven action game being developed by former Naughty Dog and Visceral Games writer and creative director Amy Hennig. This game is expected to release next year.
