Positioning Microsoft for Success: The Potential of AI PCs with a Windows Shake-Up

Microsoft underwent a reorganization following the departure of Windows and Surface chief Panos Panay last year. The two divisions were split into separate teams with the aim of focusing on web and AI features under Mikhail Parakhin. However, this shake-up did not go as planned.

Six months later, Windows and Surface have been merged back together under the leadership of Pavan Davuluri. Mustafa Suleyman, a DeepMind co-founder recently hired by CEO Satya Nadella, will take over the company’s consumer AI push. This change reflects Microsoft’s recognition that the previous reorganization was not successful.

Parakhin, who took on parts of Windows engineering after Panay’s departure, has decided to explore new opportunities and will be transitioning out of Microsoft soon. Despite initial reports of his rising leadership within the company, there were ongoing frustrations with how his team was being managed.

The new focus will be on making Microsoft Edge a better browser for consumers without resorting to aggressive tactics. The combination of hardware and software expertise under Davuluri’s leadership is expected to bring clarity to Microsoft’s AI efforts for Windows.

Microsoft is also set to launch new AI-powered features in Windows and unveil “AI PCs” with neural processing units. This shift marks a return to a focus on hardware and software for Windows, showcasing the company’s commitment to its products and innovation in the AI space.
