A report from GLAAD warns that Meta is not enforcing its own rules against anti-trans hate speech on its platform. The LGBTQ advocacy group found that there is widespread extreme anti-trans hate content across Instagram, Facebook, and Threads.
The report includes numerous examples of hate speech from Meta’s apps, reported to the company between June 2023 and March 2024. Despite violating the company’s policies, Meta allegedly failed to take action on these posts or claimed they were not violations, according to GLAAD.
The hateful content documented in the report includes anti-trans slurs, violent language, dehumanizing language, and promotions for conversion therapy – all of which are prohibited under Meta’s rules. GLAAD also highlighted that some of the reported posts came from influential accounts with large followings on Facebook and Instagram. Additionally, GLAAD shared examples of posts from Threads, Meta’s latest app where the company aims to restrict “political” content and other “potentially sensitive” topics.
GLAAD’s CEO and President Sarah Kate Ellis stated that Meta’s failure to enforce its policies against anti-LGBTQ, especially anti-trans hate, is unacceptable.
Meta has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the report. This is not the first time the company has faced criticism for handling content targeting the LGBTQ community. Last year, the Oversight Board urged Meta to improve the accuracy of its enforcement on hate speech towards the LGBTQIA+ community.
