The semiconductor industry is well known for its high water consumption, as each chip requires a significant amount of ultrapure water for production. Ultrpure water is water that has been purified to remove impurities, leaving only the basic hydrogen and oxygen molecules.

Samsung Semiconductor, in response to the growing demand for semiconductors and the global chip shortage, is planning to expand its production lines. This expansion is expected to double the amount of industrial water needed for its facilities by 2030.

To address this increased demand, Samsung has announced that it will use wastewater to meet its water needs. The company plans to purify and utilize an impressive 400 million liters of wastewater daily for chip manufacturing at its Hwaseong plant.

The wastewater will undergo multiple stages of filtration and purification to ensure it is free from any contaminants that could affect chip production. This initiative is seen as a significant step towards sustainable production for Samsung, as it reduces the reliance on freshwater sources and contributes to water conservation efforts.
