NASA is gearing up for a return to the moon with plans to send astronauts back for the first time in over 50 years. The focus is on exploring the exciting south pole region, where water may be present. Astronauts will not just make a brief visit, but will stay for weeks at a time to conduct in-depth exploration of the area. To assist in this exploration, a new moon buggy is needed.
NASA has announced three companies that will be developing the lunar terrain vehicle (LTV) for the upcoming Artemis missions. Intuitive Machines, Lunar Outpost, and Venturi Astrolab are tasked with creating a vehicle that can transport astronauts across the moon’s surface, allowing them to reach more areas of interest.
The LTV will need to withstand the extreme conditions at the lunar south pole, including cold temperatures and the fine regolith that covers the surface. The vehicle must also be capable of navigating through craters and rocky terrain. The goal is to have a functional vehicle ready for the Artemis V mission in the 2030s.
With the new LTV, astronauts will have greater mobility and be able to explore areas that would be inaccessible on foot. This will enhance scientific research and discovery on the moon, both during crewed missions and when operating remotely. The development of the lunar terrain vehicle marks an important step in NASA’s plans for extended lunar exploration.
